Below is a radar image from February 22, 2014 of the southern Vancouver Island and western Washington. You can clearly see the rainshadow, which appears as a hole in the rain that includes Victoria as well as parts of Washington State (around Sequim and Whidbey Island). This is a pretty typical location for the rainshadow. Average annual precipitation at Victoria Gonzales is 641 mm for the 1981-2010 period. Victoria Airport, 25 km to the north, receives 883 mm - nearly 40% more precipitation. Even more astounding is the change in precipitation amounts as you head west from Victoria and out of the rainshadow. Port Renfrew, located just 80 km west of Victoria on the exposed outer coast of the Island, receives an average of 3, 671 mm of precipitation annually - nearly six times as much as Victoria. Victoria receives less than half as much precipitation as Vancouver (1560 mm at Vancouver Harbour). Victoria also receives less annual precipitation than all major cities in Canada east of the Prairies.

Re: Weather 4 years ago One minute with Google will find dozens of web sites with information about weather in previous years. There is absolutely nowhere that can say what it will be like in next June. 729 posts 2. 3. Thanks a million. Humidity was at 94% a couple of days ago and I was afraid it would be worse in summer. I had read scary stories of it reaching 40 and 45 degrees in July and August and was afraid that mid June would be in the high in the 30's. In which case I would have had to cancel my booking. Many thanks 4. That's humidity due to rain at this time of the year! In the summer it is hot, sometimes very hot, but I don't find it at all humid. 5. 2 years ago -:- Message from Tripadvisor staff -:- This topic has been closed to new posts due to inactivity. Temperatures are expected to be very warm under the high, perhaps hot for a time in the south east, but look to remain average in the far north. Into the latter half of this period, there are signs that less settled conditions could push in from the north west to other parts of the country. Temperatures returning to nearer normal by the end of the week. The main purpose of the office is to bring water to arid areas and to douse pollution, sandstorms, hail and fires. If successful, the rain due to fall on August 8th will be forced to fall days earlier. The Olympic Committee and meteorologists have taken data on what the weather has been like historically on August 8th over the past 50 years. The Chinese Meteorological Association has predicted a small 10 percent chance for rainfall on the opening day, and throughout the games China's meteorological departments will provide weather forecasts on an hourly basis. Pollution in Beijing Beijingâs industrial success has brought a war with air pollution to its doorstep, a fight that has not been going well; it was recently listed the air pollution capital of the world. The city plays host to the planetâs worst levels of nitrogen dioxide which can cause fatal damage to lungs. The country has spent more than 8 billion pounds on improving the air quality but hasnât had much success. Millions of cars have been taken off the roads in the past 12 months and many factories have been moved or shut down completely.

(These exercises will not cover water vapor images. ) Weather satellites record the "brightness" or intensity of the visible and IR radiation coming from different parts of the earth or atmosphere. Black-and-white satellite images such as the examples shown above display different intensities of radiation in different shades of gray. On visible images, brighter (that is, whiter or lighter) areas represent greater intensities of visible radiation, and darker areas represent lower intensities of visible radiation, just as your eye would see. On IR images, since our eyes can't see IR radiation of any intensity, we have to decide arbitrarily how to translate different intensities into different shades of gray on a black and white image (or different colors on a color-enhanced IR image). By convention, we usually translate low intensities of IR emission to lighter shades of gray, and greater intensities of IR emission to darker shades of gray. Since IR emission intensity tells us about temperature (the higher the emission intensity the higher the temperature), the different shades of gray (or different colors) therefore tell us about differences in temperature.
