By the way, their lawns were greener than mine, that's for sure. And everything looked absolutely perfect – no weeds, everything edged. Very clean. The Hutterite man then had his wife telephone over to her home, and it turned out that they were gone to a funeral, but their 12 year old daughter and mother were around. They came out and gave us a nice tour. First stop was their Kitchen. Oh my heavens. I learned that Hutterites cook food and eat food together every meal. So it is a full scale operation – making large portions to feed 115 every meal. This is their dining room. The children ages 6-14 eat together at one table and the men & women eat together at another table at a different time. Everything is super clean and ready for the next meal. Hutterites are NOT like the Amish at all. Amish don't use modern appliances or electricity. Hutterites have top of the line appliances. We are talking about a huge fryer, a machine that can cook 70 steaks in 10 minutes, a gigantic bowl for making large quanties of soup, and that was just the first room.

June doesn't seem to be as crowded as July and August, though. May and September are great months to visit. But it is possible to have poor weather in these months. October can have nice weather. There are great fall colors in places like Spearfish Canyon toward the end of September. As far as hotel suggestions, it really depends what you are looking for. If you want a relatively larger town, Rapid City is best. Downtown Rapid City is historic and has some nice restaurants. Keystone is next to Mt. Rushmore is pretty much a pathetic tourist town with a few nice attractions. Hill City has a more attractive downtown with art galleries and such. Custer has a few interesting places. If you're looking for a lodge type experience, I'd recommend Sylvan Lake Lodge in Custer State Park. It's the closest thing you'll get to a Yellowstone style park lodge around here. It will be over $100/night, though. B&Bs and cabins are scattered around the Hills. Again, your best rates will be in the spring, fall, or winter.

So mesmerised was I by the majestic scenery and the dragons flying into the sunrise (there is, I feel, a definite atmosphere of elated daybreak here) that it took me a moment to notice the whale -- at which point my breath literally caught, and I can fairly say you're one of the very few artists on DA who produce this effect on me. Perfectly nailed atmosphere, masterful composition, immersive vista full of delightful details (the birds! the ripples on the water! )... what more could one wish?

Photo taked by Doug Stoddard in March 2002, in Puerto Rico. Cirrus This is a rarer manifestation of cirrus. Rather than fall streaks, which nicely show wind direction, this one suggests that the wind is fairly constant at the cloud altitude, and the cirrus ice particles are falling more or less straight down; resulting in spiral shaped streaks. Photo taken by Doug Stoddard in March 2002, in St. Thomas. Cirrus over Cumulus This is a great, and fairly typical shot of high thin cirrus over low cumulus clouds in the Tropics. Photo taken by Doug Stoddard in March 2002, in Puerto Rico. Cirrus over Cumulus This is a nice multi-layer tropical cloud situation, with low cumulus and high cirrus clouds both present. Photo take by Doug Stoddard in March 2002, in Puerto Rico. Feathery Cirrus with Cumulus This is a beautiful feathery cirrus cloud, with some small emerging or evaporating cumulus clouds below. Note the completely different texture of the two cloud types. Photo by Lin Chambers, Pleasant Lake, New Hampshire, July 2003.
